Visiones de Toledo de El Greco en la prensa artística española del reinado isabelino

Durante el siglo XIX se produjo en España un profundo cambio en los presupuestos estéticos, derivado entre otras cosas de la eclosión del Romanticismo y la ruptura con el canon clasicista, que permitió el redescubrimiento de importantes hitos artísticos que durante mucho tiempo permanecieron en el olvido. La ciudad de Toledo es uno de los ejemplos más flamantes de este cambio, y lo mismo podría decirse de El Greco y la producción pictórica que tan estrechamente lo unía a ella. En ambos casos nos encontramos ante objetos de estudio que poco a poco comenzaron a atraer la atención de la prensa artística del momento, al igual que sucedería con la arquitectura toledana coetánea a este artista de la que se publicaron interesantes artículos en revistas como Semanario Pintoresco Español, El Arte en España o La Revista de Bellas Artes. En nuestro estudio realizaremos un recorrido por esos textos y analizaremos hasta qué punto construcciones como el Hospital de Santa Cruz, el Hospital de Tavera o el Alcázar de Toledo eran percibidos como exponentes perfectos del paisaje urbano del siglo XVI tan característico de la pintura de El Greco.

Abstract

During the 19^th century there was in Spain a profound change in aesthetic principles, derived amongst other things from the emergence of Romanticism and the break with the classical canon, which allowed the rediscovery of important artistic landmarks that remained long forgotten. The city of Toledo is one of the most flamboyant examples of this change, and the same could be said of El Greco and the pictorial production that so closely linked him to it. In both cases we are dealing with objects of study that gradually began to attract the attention of the art press of the time, as would happen with Toledo’s contemporary architecture upon which there were published interesting articles in magazines like Semanario Pintoresco Español, El Arte en España or La Revista de Bellas Artes. In our study we will make a tour through these texts and analyze how some buildings like the Hospital of Santa Cruz, the Hospital of Tavera or the Alcazar of Toledo were perceived as perfect examples of the urban landscape of the 16^th century so characteristic of the paintings of El Greco.
